PGA starts tracking Threads, Bluesky and Truth Social

The Platform Governance Archive (PGA) is expanding its scope to track the policy changes of three new social media platforms: Threads, Bluesky, and Truth Social. The initiative aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics and governance of these emerging platforms.

Threads is an online social media and networking service launched on July 5, 2023. It is operated by Meta Platforms, Inc which also owns Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook. Threads offers users the ability to post and share text, images, and videos.

Bluesky is a decentralized social media platform that was founded on October 4, 2021. Jack Dorsey initiated the service while he was still CEO of Twitter, and developed the technology in parallel. The platform is now owned by Jay Graber and the Bluesky team. Bluesky aims to provide a more open and user-controlled social media experience.

Truth Social is a social media platform owned by Trump Media & Technology Group which was founded by the former US president Donald Trump. It was founded on October 20, 2021, and officially launched on February 21, 2022. The platform serves as an alternative to mainstream social media platforms.

PGA has decided to start tracking Threads, Bluesky and Truth Social amidst their growing user-base and increasing influence in the digital space, especially amidst elections around the globe in 2024. By monitoring changes in the policies of social media platforms, the PGA continues to provide valuable insights into the governance of online platforms and their impact on digital communication.

The Platform Governance Archive (PGA) is a data repository and platform that collects and curates policies of major social media platforms in a long-term perspective. PGA is hosted by Lab Platform Governance, Media, and Technology at the University of Bremen, in collaboration with Open Terms Archive.
